Conscious Consumerism in the Age of Globalization and Social Media

In today's world, the ability to purchase anything is readily accessible, with a vast array of options available for every product on the market. The line between the urge to buy and the actual need has become blurred, driven by a powerful advertising industry that influences our choices. The ease of internet access and constant connectivity fuels nonstop scrolling and adding items to our carts.

Globalization has made cross-border shipping simple, further expanding our choices and boosting the economy through increased shopping. This surge in shopping, both online and offline, cannot be ignored, as it significantly impacts the economy.

The environment now promotes unnecessary shopping. Whether observing someone's belongings at a social gathering, checking social media statuses, strolling through market lanes, or seeing advertisements on billboards and online, we are constantly encouraged to own more products. The unlimited access to products and various payment methods, including online payments, credit cards, EMIs, and loans, even for items worth a mere thousand rupees, fuels this behavior. The desire for social media fame has led many to flaunt new possessions and influence others to make similar purchases for the sake of gaining more likes.

But do we truly need all these products? It's essential to differentiate between needs and wants. Not everything advertised is necessary. Consumers must draw a clear line between genuine needs and the urge to buy items impulsively.

As consumers, the power is in our hands. We should shop consciously, making choices that contribute positively to society and the environment. Individual behaviour can significantly impact communities, social groups, the environment, and the planet. Choose to consume with awareness and contribute positively to conscious consumerism.
